Nubbin Ridge school

Nubbin Ridge school was in operation for about a decade under the Imperial Calcasieu Parish school system. It was situated about one mile north of the present site of Hathaway High School, near the northeast corner of the current Crochet Road and Highway 26. Children who went to that school lived between Bayou Nezpique and Elton Road on the east and west and between Bucklin Road and Bryan Road on the north and south.

When Jeff Davis Parish took over in 1913, petitioners for the Special School District who asked for an eight mill tax to operate the school were J.C. Hart, J.W. Clifford, Camile Gary, Oscar Landry, T.S. Walker, Joseph M. Sewell, C.E. Fruge, Felix St. Germaine, Paulin Landry, Jr., Adam LeBlanc, Israel Lantz, and Fargus Granger.

The school was in operation until it was consolidated with Raymond students above the 5th Grade to Hathaway school on the present site of Hathaway High School in 1915.

The school was named Nubbin Ridge because farmers had tried to grow corn, but they could only produce corn nubbins (small/immature corn). The children attending this school were taught by Miss Kathy Eckel, who with a running start could one-hop into the side-saddle on her little gray pony. She was much admired by her young male students. Mr. Boniface Frederick also taught there. He was known for his beautiful penmanship that each of his pupils tried to master.
