Profile of a Past Family: Crochet

Family of Augustin Crochet

The Augustin Crochet family was a French-speaking family that owned a farm in Panchoville at the turn of the Twentieth Century. Augustin was born in Januray of 1867 in Louisiana. He married his wife, Marguerite Lopez, about 1890. He was 23. She was 15. They would have nine children.

1. Daughter, Oliva, was born Saturday, November 7, 1891. The record of her baptism indicates she was baptized in Jennings at Our Lady Help Christians Catholic Church on January 31, 1892. She would later marry Adras LeJuene, seven years her junior. Their first child, Augustin and Marguerite's second grandchild, was born in September 1918 and named Henry. In 1920, the Census recorded Oliva, Adras, and Henry living in her parents house. In the 1920 Census, Mr. LeJuene was recorded a canal laborer.

2. Daughter, Artemise, was born January 1894.

3. Daughter, Eulia Marie, was born Wednesday, September 30, 1896. The record of her baptism indicates she was baptized in Nez Pique Bayou on Friday, October 23, 1896.

4. Son, Luce (Lewis/Louis in later Census data), was born February 1898. When he was 18, he married Celina, who was 19. In 1917, he had a son named Andrew. This was Augustin and Marguerite's first grandchild. In the 1920 Census, he was recorded as doing mill work.

5. Daughter, Adeluce, was born September 1899.

6. Son, Leo, was born May 25, 1906. He was attending Crochet school in 1920.

7. Son, Joseph Reol, was born July 22, 1909.

8. Daughter, Maria, was born in 1910.

9. Daughter, Evela (Avala in later Census data) was born in 1914.

In the 1930 Census, it appears that Augustin was ill (presumably). His wife, Margaurite, is listed as the "Head" of the household, but she is not listed as a Widow. Further detail coming soon. Also, by the 1930's all those in the family were listed as bilingual.
